1. WASHING YOUR FACE WITH SOAP
This is a big no-no. Not taking off your makeup before going to bed is definitely not ideal, and especially with something harsh like a high PH soap, which can cause your skin to become dry and irritated. You should find a cleanser that is suitable for your skin type, and make sure you are cleansing morning and night.
2. SLEEPING ON YOUR SIDE
If you squish your face on your pillow over night, it can end up creating permanent crease lines. It is suitable to use a silk pillow and arrange your head so you only sleep with your hairline meeting the pillow. It sounds odd, but it is worth a try. If this is uncomfortable for you, try sleeping on your back with a pillow between your knees.
3. BEAUTY SLEEP
Not getting enough beauty sleep can add many years on how you look. Try to go to sleep at the same time every night, and reset your body clock. Ideally 10pm-6am is a good night's sleep.
4. RUBBING YOUR EYES
The skin around your eyes is very thin and sensitive, so it will be one of the first places that will show signs of aging. Over time, it can crease and stretch, causing your eyelids to droop and sag. When you remove your makeup around your eyes, make sure you do so gently. By using an oil-based product to wipe off any excess mascara, eyeliner or eye shadow, this will help in keeping the skin around the eye-area stronger for longer.
5. NOT ENOUGH WATER
Don't wait too long to drink some water! If your mouth is feeling dry and cakey, that is a sign that you're already dehydrated. Make sure to keep a water bottle on your desk or bedside table, and be sure you are refilling it a couple of times a day.
6. TOO UNDERWEIGHT
Make sure you are maintaining a healthy weight. As we age, our collagen and elastin stop reproducing at the same rate, which will add years to your face and the lines and wrinkles will be much more visible.
7. SOAK UP THAT VITAMIN C
It is very important to take your oral vitamin c, either in supplement or organic seasonal fruits and vegetables. Even a daily topical Vitamin C dose will do you good!
8. NOT WEARING SUNSCREEN
Using a sunscreen that contains zinc oxide is the best option for blocking out UVAs and UVB rays, which contribute to skin cancer and sun damage. We still get sun exposure when we're in the car driving, and through our windows, so definitely go for a SPF of 15+.
9. BOOZING AND BINGE DRINKING
Drinking alcohol dehydrates your body and relaxes your muscles. That being said, your throat muscles are also being relaxed, meaning when you sleep, you are losing the ability to breathe properly and get a decent night's sleep. Try to limit your intake, and strive to drink one glass of water after every glass of alcohol to balance out your hydration, and hopefully consume less alcohol.
10. NOT ENOUGH HEALTHY FATS
Only eat fats that contain essential fatty acids and omega-3's. A couple of foods you could find those in would be olives and macadamias. Stay away from hydrogenated and trans fatty acids, like margarine and processed oils. If you're unsure, read the labels - as you would do with your skincare, and avoid ingredients you can't pronounce.
